Tips for drive Motorcycle Safety

As a rider there are certain precautions that you can take to increase your safety and as a driver of an automobile there are precautions that you can take to increase road safety for everyone.

As a Motorcycle Owner/Rider
If you own and ride a motorcycle there are certain things that you should be doing to increase your level of safety. Do you really need to be told this? Wear a helmet! This seems like one of the simplest steps that a rider can take- wears a helmet and protects your head. If you should take a spill and your head is not protected you can be permanently brain-damaged or dead!

Here is another simple tip. Wear proper clothing, road rash really hurts. Ask anyone that has experienced road rash how bad it really is. Far too many riders do not take this simple step seriously; they ride with inappropriate footwear, shorts, tee shirts and lots of exposed skin. It is really bad idea. Keep yourself safe by covering up. Wear the right footwear so your feet do not slip and slide around.

At nighttime make sure you are easy to see, keep your headlight clean and wear a reflector belt so that you are obvious to other motorists.

Pay attention! If you are riding on the open road with cars around, you are really going to have to pay attention. It seems like the drivers of the cars should have to watch out for you, but it is your responsibility to keep yourself safe so you have to pay attention. Do not weave in and out of traffic, cut people off or kick up anyone’s road rage with motorcycle antics.

As a Car Driver
If you are driving a car on an open road there are some precautions that you should take to ensure that you do not cause harm to someone on a motorcycle. The first step is a very simple step and is not only good for motorcycle riders, but is good for the environment. Never throw anything out your car window. It can be dangerous to the motorcyclist and frankly it is disgusting behavior to throw stuff out of your car window. This includes spitting out of your car window.

Stay off their tails. A lot of drivers will pull right up to a motorcycle at a stop light, give them some room.

Pay attention to your surroundings when you are driving, give the motorcyclist the right of way because they are unprotected and the road is far more dangerous for them.

Motorcycle safety is a community issue not just a motorcyclist issue. It is important that everyone takes steps to ensure that motorcycle riders are safe on the road.
